FIIs have sold over ₹70,000 crore of Indian equities in the last 10 sessions
Provisional NSE data show foreign institutional investors (FIIs) sold about ₹12,944 crore of equities on Thursday alone, their tenth straight session of net selling.
Foreign institutional investors (FIIs) have sold more than ₹70,000 crore of Indian equities over the last 10 trading sessions, according to data trackers that add up the provisional daily numbers from the exchanges. Thursday, 8 October 2026 was the tenth straight session of net selling.
What the daily numbers show
According to provisional NSE data, FIIs sold a net ₹12,944 crore on Thursday (sales of about ₹28,669 crore against purchases of about ₹15,725 crore). That was their biggest single-day sale in the run. The earlier days this month were about ₹6,121 crore on Wednesday, ₹2,961 crore on Tuesday, ₹4,699 crore on Monday and ₹9,484 crore on 1 October, which adds up to about ₹36,000 crore for October so far. The rest of the 10-session total comes from selling in the last days of September. The ₹70,000 crore figure is a single tracker's cumulative number, so treat it as approximate until the final data is out.
Domestic investors absorbed much of it
Domestic institutional investors (DIIs) bought about ₹10,703 crore on Thursday, which cushioned part of the fall. Even so, the Nifty ended Thursday at 22,231.80, down 1.64%, after touching a 52-week low during the session.
What is behind the selling
Reports link the selling to costlier US bond yields, with the US 10-year yield close to multi-decade highs, to high crude oil prices on West Asia tensions, to a weak rupee near 97 to the dollar, and to the RBI's rate hike on 7 October. Some early signs of relief appeared on Friday, as US yields and crude eased after President Trump said the US would not strike Iran before the midterm elections.
Why it matters
FII flows are one of the main drivers of Indian share prices, so the market will watch whether the selling slows or continues when trading opens on Friday. The figures above are provisional, and exchange data for FIIs can be revised.
