Shares of Paytm (One 97 Communications) fell sharply on 8 October after a report that the planned merchant discount rate (MDR) on UPI payments may be delayed by several months. We could not find any official confirmation of the delay.

Shares of One 97 Communications, the parent company of Paytm, fell sharply in early trade on Thursday, 8 October 2026, after a report that the merchant discount rate (MDR) on UPI payments may be delayed by several months. On the NSE the stock touched a low of ₹1,558.80, about 10% below Wednesday's close of ₹1,732.00. At 10:35 am IST it was trading about 5% lower.

What was reported

CNBC-TV18 reported that the proposed introduction of MDR on UPI transactions may be delayed by several months. Reuters, citing that report, said Paytm fell 7.6% and One MobiKwik Systems fell 7.2% in early trade. Business Standard also reported steep falls in both stocks, of up to 10% at one stage.

We could not find any official confirmation of the delay from the government, the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) or the Reserve Bank of India (RBI). Until one is issued, the report should be treated as unconfirmed.

Why it matters

In September, payment stocks rose after reports of a UPI fee that improved the revenue outlook for payment companies, according to Reuters. A delay would push out the extra revenue that some investors had started to expect. That is the likely reason for the sharp reaction in these shares.

What to watch

Watch for any statement from the Finance Ministry, NPCI or the RBI on when MDR on UPI will start. CapitCue will update this page if the position changes.
